Iowa teen calmly tells officers he stabbed parents, hacked surviving mom with ax so he would ‘take charge of his life’

Iowa authorities have arrested a Cedar Rapids teen who sat bloodied outside his family home Thursday waiting for cops after slaughtering his parents.

Ethan Orton, 17, was found at about 2 a.m. outside the home where he stabbed his parents, Casey Orton, 42, and Misty Scott Slade, 41, to death.

The teen added that he hacked his mom with an ax after noticing that she was still alive after the initial stabbing.

  • Orton told detectives that he committed the crime because he wanted to “take charge of his life.”

    “I don’t know if he was expecting the police to come,” Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne Jerman said.

    “When we arrived, the officer who encountered him first described him as being calm.”

    Orton was charged as an adult in connection with his parents’ murders. His bond was set at $2 million.
