Hampton County news, South Carolina news.

Alex Murdaugh surrendered today ahead of a first appearance in the Hampton County court, in South Carolina after he admitted to having plotted his own murder to allow his surviving son insurance money.

The 53-year-old is now facing conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, according to his lawyer, after he hired a hitman and provided him with a firearm to shoot him dead and subsequently, garner his son millions of dollars in a life insurance payout.

The affluent legal dynasty heir is also in the center of a new investigation into the 2018 suspicious trip-and-fall death of his housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield.

  • “The decedent’s death was not reported to the Coroner at the time, nor was an autopsy performed,” Hampton County Coroner Angela Topper said.

“On the death certificate the manner of death was ruled ‘Natural’ which is inconsistent with injuries sustained in a trip and fall accident,” she added.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) announced that the investigation will also focus on valuables and money Satterfield had left.

“Based upon a request from the Hampton County Coroner earlier today, as well as information gathered during the course of our other ongoing investigations involving Alex Murdaugh. SLED is opening a criminal investigation into the death of Gloria Satterfield and the handling of her estate.”
