North Carolina authorities are investigating an accidental shooting that claimed the life of a 29-year-old father after his son retrieved a gun and fired at him.
Markovia Durham was pronounced dead after being shot several times at around 8:45 p.m. Police said that his 2-year-old son was the culprit.
Durham was reportedly dining at his mother’s home during a visit with his wife and toddler when the tragic incident took place.
The boy, described as very close to Durham, was playing with the weapon when he shot his father’s back as he sat on a couch and ate his dinner.
“He wants his dada,” the child’s grandma said. “He’s only a 2-year-old. He doesn’t understand.”
Neighbor Tasha Phillips added: “That little boy is gonna go through something for the rest of his life. And it just hurts because I have grandkids of my own.”
