A San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputy has barely escaped death earlier last when he was closely exposed to fentanyl during a routine traffic stop, a newly released body cam footage shows.

David Faiivae passed out during the July 3 incident while processing evidence that turned out to be fentanyl.

“He found a white substance that he suspected was drugs,” Field Training Officer Cpl. Scott Crane said. “I was like, ‘Hey dude, too close. You can’t get too close to it.’”

“I remember not feeling right, and then I fall back and I don’t remember anything after that,” the rescued Faiivae said. “I was trying to gasp for breath, but I couldn’t breathe at all.”

Crane added: “It’s an invisible killer. He would have died in the parking lot if he was alone.”
