Serial robber takes own life after being pulled over by Birmingham Police

Authorities in Pleasant Grove, Alabama said that a serial business robber has committed suicide behind the wheel after being pulled over by officers late Sunday.

41-year-old Tellis Tremaine Porterfield shot himself in the head at about 10:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Park Road.

Police Capt. Danny Reid said that as officers with the Pleasant Grove Department approached the suspect, he fired a shot to his head and was found slumped over the wheel of his car.

  • Reid added that when Porterfield was pulled over, it was because the vehicle he was riding had a stolen license plate.

    The suspect was declared dead at 10:50 p.m. Sunday. Detectives said that he had previous run-ins with law enforcement over bank robberies during the last few months.

    He was booked into jail for robbing two businesses, two pharmacies, and a PNC Bank before being released on bond.
