Texas death row inmate executed for killing wife, daughter, and father-in-law; 2nd State execution this year

A Texas death row inmate was executed Wednesday for killing three family members in 2009 including his wife and daughter.

John William Hummell’s last words were a brief prayer and a remorseful confession.

“I truly regret killing my family,” the 45-year-old said adding that he was grateful for his friends’ support. “I loved each and every one of you.”

  • Hummell breathed loudly and snorted for a minute as the lethal injection took effect. He was pronounced dead at 6:49 p.m.

    The man was convicted of stabbing his pregnant wife Joy Hummel 35 times hen beating his 5-year-old daughter and her disabled maternal grandfather to death with a baseball bat.

    “It was too easy. It was like going to sleep,” the male victim’s brother said after watching the execution, suggesting Hummel should have been executed with “a rope, a guillotine, or a firing squad.”

    “There are all kinds of good stuff to kill people. They should get what they deserve; An eye for an eye. I’m sorry. I’m old school.”
