A Philadelphia boy was declared dead at a hospital late Saturday after he shot himself in the head while playing with his parents’ firearm.
The deadly incident occurred at around 6 p.m. Saturday at a Tioga-Nicetown home where the unidentified 10-year-old played with his sister, 8.
The children were home alone at the time and found the unsecured gun in a cabinet and began playing with it.
“Supposedly, there was a gun inside a cabinet that the children located, and at some point, the child discharged the weapon into his own head,” Police Capt. Lee Strollo said.
“We’re looking into how the gun got on location and who the owner of the gun is.”
The younger sibling sought help from a neighbor for her brother who couldn’t be helped.
“We as a society got to get it together because our young children should not be having to go through this,” a witness said while another added: “When I hear a child, that’s what brings tears to my eyes.”
