Miami Dade authorities declare ‘Level 5 mass casualty’ after residential building collapsed killing at least 1, and injuring 9

Around 80 emergency crews are desperately looking for survivors after a tragic collapse of a residential building in Surfside, Miami at around 2 a.m. Thursday.

Witnesses said that victims were screaming as the 12-story Champlain Towers South apartment building fell down to the ground.

So far, one person was pronounced dead and nine others were rushed to area hospitals. Nearby buildings have been evacuated.

    Actor Jamal Akakpo said on Twitter that the building was next to his hotel and that authorities ordered an emergency evacuation in the middle of the night.

    “We had to evacuate our hotel obviously and as well as the surrounding area so that they can do the search and rescue. People from our hotel and the collapsed building are at a nearby rec center,” he said.

    More victims are believed to be still trapped in the wreckage but authorities have no official numbers of the building occupants.
