A North Carolina baby has been mauled to death within three minutes after his dad left him alone with the family’s two Rottweilers to move a sprinkler outside.

Johnston County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Danny Johnson said that the 10-month-old baby couldn’t be revived despite his dad and first responders’ best efforts and died at around 8 p.m.

“The father had left the small child inside the residence unattended for only a couple of minutes, he heard a lot of commotion in the house, went back inside, and found the baby unresponsive,” the official said.

“The Sheriff’s Office and EMS responded but were unsuccessful in reviving the child and that is the reason for its death.”

  • Johnson added that the baby’s father is a police officer and that the two Rottweilers’ deadly attack occurred very quickly.

“He just stepped outside to move a sprinkler and the neighbor pulled up talking to him, and not even a couple of minutes passed and he heard the commotion inside the house.”

Police did not specify whether the two canines had been involved in any previous attacks against people.

“It’s a bad scene. Anytime that a young child like that passes – or any child – it is very hard for us all because we all have children. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. We can’t imagine what they are going through. They’ve got a long road ahead of them.”
