Minneapolis college senior shot dead on graduation day: ‘He should have been celebrating’

Minneapolis authorities have identified one of two men killed during an early Saturday mass shooting as a mechanical engineering major.

Charlie Johnson was due to graduate later that same day from the University of St. Thomas but died in the Monarch nightclub shooting that also claimed one of the gunmen’s lives.

“Our community s shocked and saddened by the news of Charlie’s death,” UST President Sullivan said. “We grieve with his family and friends and pray for their comfort.”

“On a day he and his family should have been celebrating his graduation from our School of Engineering, we are devastated.”

    Eight people sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to area hospitals including three men.

    A 23-year-old suspect was arrested after the mayhem that left the other perpetrator dead.

    “Last night brought more tragic news,” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said in a statement. “Lives lost on our Northside and downtown, with bullets striking innocent bystanders as people welcome the warm weather and celebrate being together again.”

    “We must come together with an unrelenting commitment to preventative work, stopping the gun violence and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
