The Dallas man who abducted a 4-year-old sleeping toddler was identified as Darriynn Ronnell Brown, a 19-year-old family friend who was caught lifting the boy from his bed hours before his death.
Cash Gernon’s bloodied body was found half a mile away from the home where he lived with his dad’s girlfriend. He was dead for about two hours when found.
Surveillance footage caught Brown abducting the child who had been sleeping and carrying him away. The murdered tot had a twin brother who had not been harmed.
“The sweetest little boy,” relative Kamron Mori said. “He loved everybody, the biggest smile ever. He loved to play superheroes with us and all that.”
Mori, who is the son of the woman caring for the twins, had attended high school with the suspect. He recalled spotting Brown five days before the gruesome murder near the house.
“Just like, ‘Hey, How y’all doing’ and that was it. There’s no reason for this. What he did was wrong and I don’t know what made him think that this alright and this is OK. This is a 4-year-old kid, like for what?”
He continued: “Like why? He was 4, you know. Who does this to a 4-year-old kid? For what? For no reason, just because you want to be evil?”
In the meanwhile, Brown was charged with kidnapping charges, and more charges are expected. His mother said that her son received mental health treatment.
“I know my son is traumatized. I know he’s scared because I’m scared.”
