Florida toddlers shot, one fatally, as they waited for parents in parked car: ‘This is awful’

A Florida child, 4, died and his old sibling fights for life after a fatal shooting at a parking lot across a subway restaurant Friday.

Hendry County Sheriff Steve Whidden said that the gunman was apparently inside another vehicle at the same parking lot. The kids were sitting inside their family’s parked car.

“It may have been an accident but we’re looking at it as a homicide to cover all of our bases,” Whidden said.

“Apparently, the parents drove the children to the hospital” where the 5-year-old remains in critical condition.

The sheriff was visibly upset by the incident and the loss of a young, innocent life that broke the family.

“This is awful. I mean what can you say? they lost a 4-year-old child. It’s heartbreaking, gut-wrenching.”
