A 31-year-old Florida inmate convicted of fatally stabbing his middle school classmate back in 2004 had died in jail on Thursday.
The State Department of Corrections did not elaborate on Michael Hernandez’s death at Columbia Correctional Institute but sources said that he suddenly collapsed in his cell.
In February 2004, Hernandez became fascinated with serial killers and established a list of people he wanted to slaughter, starting with classmates Jaime Gough and Andre Martin.
He told both victims that he had something to show them before class at their Southwood Middle School’s bathroom where he cut Gough’s throat and stabbed him more than 40 times. Martin did not show up for the deadly encounter.
“I was not expecting this at all,” Gough’s father said adding that he and his wife were “shocked” over the news.
Gough said that his late son was a straight-A student and loved to play the violin. His surviving friend Martin is now a Miami-Dade County detective.
“We miss him, and the big question is: What would he be today?”
