Asian Americans in Utah receive threatening letters: ‘Need to go back to your countries’

Salt Lake Valley news, Utah news.

Utah authorities are investigating threatening notes that have been sent to Asian Americans in Salt Lake Valley over the last few weeks.

The anonymous letters were identical and told Asians that they needed to go back to their home countries “now before more Asians are KILLED…Spread the word or you may die.”

The writers accused Asians of causing Covid-19 and then lying about it. The note ends with “666” and has March 17, 2021, or the day following Atlanta mass shootings as a date.

Asian residents and businesses in Taylorsville and West Valley City reported receiving the notes slid under their doors but surveillance cameras did not capture a suspect.

“This is an individual telling an entire community that they are at risk,” Sgt. Melody Cutler said. “That threatens a lot of people. It’s not right. It’s not fair.”

She added: “If we have multiple people that are receiving the same letter, it’s likely coming from an individual or small group of individuals, and taking care of it before it becomes a bigger problem is the goal.”
