The Acadia National Park Service announced Saturday that two bodies have been recovered on Dorr Mountain near Bar Harbor.

The recovery came following hours of a search involving a US Coast Guard helicopter and a 15-rescuer ground team.

The family of a Massachusetts couple contacted the park officials to seek information about them after they went missing for days.

  • “The two hikers appear to have fallen about 100 feet along with ice-covered cliff bands on Dorr Mountain,” National Park Service spokesman Jay Elhard said.

The unidentified victims were a 30-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man who told relatives on Thursday that they planned to visit the Cadillac Mountain, near the scene where they’ve been found dead.

“All trails in Acadia are incredibly icy at this time due to recent rains followed by days of cold weather,” Elhard said.

“Hikers should be prepared for cold and icy conditions with extra layers of clothing and traction control devices.”
