Cop fatally shot while escorting disorderly spectator out New Orleans HS basketball game

A 38-year-old police officer was fatally shot while escorting an unruly suspect outside a New Orleans stadium during a high school basketball game late Friday.

Martinus Mitchum was assigned as a security officer for the game opposing Carver and Warren Easton high schools teams.

The suspect began arguing with a Carver High School employee as he tried to unlawfully break into the building.

  • Mitchum intervened to end the quarrel and remove the suspect away from the scene when the latter produced a gun and fired several shots.

    The officer was rushed to University Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries. The gunman was arrested at the scene.

    The New Orleans Police Department said that Mitchum served as a member of the Tulane University force and a City Court constable.
