Hours after being reported missing; toddler found dead in Cheyenne dumpster

A Cheyenne, Wyoming toddler was discovered dead in a dumpster just hours after his family reported him missing on Friday.

The search for Athian Rivera, 2-year-old, ended tragically when police discovered the body of the missing toddler in a Desmet Drive dumpster.

Rivera vanished Friday at around 1 p.m. in the 500 block of Desmet Drive. The boy was wearing a short-sleeved shirt and black pants.

Several law enforcement agencies participated in the search for Rivera including the Laramie County Sheriff’s Department, the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Cheyenne Fire and Rescue.

  • “This is still an active and ongoing investigation,” Cheyenne Police Department Communication Officer Alexandra Farkas said.

    “We do not believe there is any present danger to the public at this time.”

    Following the grim discovery late Friday, the grieving community gathered for a candlelit vigil to show support for the boy’s family.

    “Being a mom, I can’t imagine what they’re going through,” resident Nicole Cordova said. “But I want them to know that we care, and we’re praying for them.”
