Houston news, Texas news.

An “Unprecedented” winter storm has killed 11 people across Texas and North Carolina and deprived nearly 4 million residents of power amid freezing temperatures.

Among the fatalities are a San Antonio man who froze to death on his lawn and a mom and her 8-year-old daughter who died of monoxide intoxication while trying to find some heat in a running car.

Things got worse when the Lone Star State’s electrical network endured a brutal failure Monday leaving 2 million Texans without electricity, according to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas.

Texas residents couldn’t rely on wind power either as storms knocked out more than half of Texas’ wind power generation capacity. Power outages are expected to last into late Tuesday.

“This week, as the state and nation are blanketed in ice, we can expect most of our wind turbines to be still and solar panels to produce little to no electricity,” Texas Public Policy Foundation communications manager Katie Tahuahua said.

“What’s warming Texas and keeping them alive in this deadly winter blast? Fossil fuels, particularly natural gas.”
