Friday’s questioning session at former President Donald Trump's trial saw Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders quarreling with one of the defense attorneys in the case.

Sanders submitted a written question asking Trump’s lawyer Michael van der Veen:

“Are the prosecutors right when they claim that Trump was telling a ‘big lie’ or in your judgment did Trump actually with the election?”

Apparently stunned by the challenging question, van der Veen skeptically asked: “My judgment? Who asked that?”

To which Sanders replied loudly: “I did!”

  • “My judgment is irrelevant in this proceeding. It absolutely is,” van der Veen answered. Sanders yelled back at the lawyer: “No, it isn’t!” then continued: “You represent the President of the United States!”

At this point, Sen. Patrick Leahy intervened to end up the argument as he should do being the official presiding over the trial.

“The Senate will be in order. Senators under the rules cannot challenge the content of the response,” he said.

Trump’s lawyer went on with his answer that Sanders broke off moments earlier: “In my judgment, it’s irrelevant to the question before this body.”

“What’s relevant in this impeachment article is, ‘Were Mr. Trump’s words inciteful to the point of violence and riot?’”
