Impeachment managers wrapped up their case yesterday with former President Donald Trump’s lawyers set to take the stand next.
Defense attorneys are scheduled to present their arguments today following a strong and often emotional prosecution that lasted days.
In their closing arguments, prosecutors tried to link the Capitol insurrection with Trump producing videos posted by the rioters claiming they did it for him.
“They truly believed that the whole intrusion was at the president’s orders,” Rep. Diana DeGette added.
But despite their outstanding work, the impeachment managers would need a two-thirds majority of the Senate to convict Trump of inciting the mob.
That means that at least 17 Republican Senators would have to team-up with the 50 Democrats to rule Trump guilty.
President Biden said on Thursday that the prosecution’s good job and the grim evidence displayed during the first days of the trial could change “some minds” in the Senate.
However, an acquittal seems more likely as the overwhelming majority of GOP lawmakers are against going ahead with this trial since it would badly impact their careers to stand against the widely-supported Trump.
