An elderly Oregon man was found with serious injuries near his deceased wife in what he intended to be a murder-suicide, Jackson County Police said.
88-year-old James Edward Wheeler told detectives that he and his 87-year-old wife suffered health issued and that he thought they “would be better off dead than alive.”
Joan Wheeler was shot once in the head with a 20-gauge shotgun her husband owned since he was 12. The suicidal man then tried to take his own life in the laundry room.
Five days following the incident, Wheeler was charged Friday with second-degree murder and was denied bond.
He appeared in a wheelchair at his arraignment wearing an anti-suicide garment, according to reporters.
