Sources said that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has urged fellow Republicans in a private call not to challenge Joe Biden’s electoral victory.
McConnell said that the move will only force them to take a “terrible vote” when they will have at the end of the day to vote the objection down.
Republican Senator Shelley Moore Capito said that no one disagreed with McConnell during the caucus call: “There wasn’t any pushback to it.”
On January 6, Congress will certify this year’s election results. McConnell has acknowledged Biden as the President-elect.
“Many of us hoped that the presidential election would yield a different result, but our system of government has processes to determine who will be sworn in on January 20,” he said.
“The Electoral College has spoken. So today, I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden.”
However, Republican Representative Mo Brooks who didn’t comment Tuesday call had said a day earlier that he plans to challenge Biden’s victory in the House.
“I’m quite confident that if we only counted lawful votes cast by eligible American citizens, Donald Trump won the Electoral College, and we should not be counting illegal votes and putting in an illegitimate President of the US.”
