More than half of New York firefighters said in a poll that they’re not getting the Covid vaccine because they do not trust its safety.
They were more than 55 percent of the 2,000 surveyed fire workers who replied “no” to the question “would you get the Covid-19 Vaccine from Pfizer?”
In recent weeks, the new coronavirus cases among firefighters have tripled nearing 130 infected workers.
Andy Ansbro, the President of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, gave an explanation to the poll’s results claiming those below 50 years old do not think the virus threatens their lives.
“A lot of them probably feel they are not in a risk category, they are younger, stronger, they may have already had it and gotten through it, and feel it’s not their problem.”
He added: “They are more familiar with the coronavirus than they are with the vaccine.”
The poll’s finding echoes that conducted among emergency medical workers working for the fire department regarding the readiness to get vaccinated.
“A few are anxious to get it, but there have been a few dozen responses saying, ‘Thanks, but no thanks,’” Ansbro said.
“They were thankful it was not mandatory because they don’t want to be looked at as test subjects.”
