Michigan teen whose 2017 arrest led to police reform dies of Covid at age 14

The brutal arrest of Honestie Hodges in 2017 had sparked outrage across the country and led to statewide police reform in handling youth cases.

Hodges died over the last weekend after losing her battle with Covid, her grandmother announced.

The 14-year-old was positively diagnosed with coronavirus on Nov. 9 and was hospitalized that same night and placed on a ventilator.

  • Hodges spent two weeks at Helen Devos Children’s Hospital where she was given oxygen and blood transfusions before she passed away on Sunday.

    Three years ago, the then 11-year-old was caught on video being handcuffed by Grand Rapids Police officers who then placed her in the back of a police cruiser.

    She was busted outside her home as she headed with her mom and other relatives to the store. Police were responding to a stabbing report in the area.
