Maynard treasurer shot dead by son who then killed self, one day before honoring by town board

A hardworking treasurer has been gunned down in an apparent murder-suicide, only a day away from her honoring ceremony by Maynard officials.

61-year-old Cheryl Kane was shot and killed at her garage as she was getting out of her car at around 4:45 p.m. Monday.

Her 41-year-old son Richard Kane Jr. was also dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

  • The woman was Maynard’s treasurer and was set to be honored on Tuesday in the city’s Board of Selectmen’s meeting.

    “We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Maynard’s Treasurer/Collector Cheryl Kane,” Maynard Town Administrator Greg Johnson said.

    “Cheryl was a wonderful, bright member of our team. She was a tremendous asset to our community, and we’re grateful for the contributions she made during her time with us.”
