2 dead in explosion at Connecticut Veterans Affairs hospital

Connecticut authorities said Friday morning that two people have died in an explosion at a Veterans Affairs hospital, local news outlets reported.

State and federal detectives responded to the scene following reports of “an explosion type incident” at the VA Medical Center early Friday.

Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal confirmed the two fatalities and the AP later mentioned the explosion occurred in the maintenance area of the hospital.

  • West Haven Police said on Facebook that the explosion was “an isolated incident with no threats to the public.”

    Early reports identified the victims as an employee at the facility and an outside contractor.

    The same source also cited a leak in the steam plant as the cause of the blast and the two men were apparently trying to fix the leak. Smoke was coming from the hospital following the explosion.

    FBI spokesperson Charlie Grady said that state police were leading the investigation but “the FBI will assist Connecticut State Police as needed.”
