A toddler boy lost his life after he fatally shot himself in the chest with an unsecured handgun belonging to a relative while celebrating his 3rd birthday.
The tragedy unfolded Saturday shortly after 4:15 p.m. at a home located in the 23000 block of Owens Road, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office announced in a Facebook post.
“Family and friends had gathered earlier to celebrate the birthday of the three-year-old, and while playing cards, heard a gunshot,” officials said.
The weapon belonged to a family member and it accidentally falls out of his pocket.
The child was transported to a nearby fire station where he succumbed to his injury.
His name was not publicly released due to his age.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of this tragic accident,” a release from the Sheriff’s Department read.
The investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances of the incident. No arrest has been made at this time.
