Inside the Presidential Suite at Walter Reed: Restricted access and smart rooms

Bethesda news, Maryland news.

The stay at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center won’t be that annoying for President Trump given the lavish 3,000 square feet wing where he temporarily resides.

Formally known as Ward 71, the suite is one of six “special patient rooms reserved for high-ranking White House members and military officers,” USA Today reported.

The Bethesda hospital is the biggest medical center in the United States with over 7,000 health workers and “prescreened specialists whose backgrounds checks are available to the president.”

Describing the presidential wing, Rear Admiral Connie Mariano who had access to it during former Presidents George HW Bush, and Bill Clinton’s stays at the hospital, described the Medical Evaluation and Treatment Unit (METU) as separate, private, and especially “equipped for their use.”

It is “outfitted with protective devices and communications gear used in support of the president,” and built with “two-way communication devices, audiovisual and wireless capabilities as well as bedside entertainment, all of which can be controlled via a wall-mounted, removable keyboard that the patient has access to at all times.”

The access-restricted suite also includes bedrooms, living rooms, conference and office space, a dining room, and a 24/day available doctor’s office.
