DNA breakthrough leads investigators to mom, 52, who killed newborn three decades ago

Nearly 32 years ago, a 20-year-old new mom had killed her baby boy and dumped the body in a creek after hiding her pregnancy from her family.

The body of the newborn was found in a paper bag in the woods by two children on May 15, 1988. Autopsy results revealed that the boy was alive at birth and was murdered prompting police to launch an investigation in the case that remained unsolved for decades.

Last year, Alameda County investigators reopened the murder case and used genealogy to link evidence found at the scene with existing Data of the suspect’s genetic tree leading them to Lesa Lopez, 52.

Lopez admitted to the murder and is being held on a $2million bond: “It was a baby boy who never had a voice and never had the chance of living a full life,” police said.
