Pennsylvania State Police revealed that skeletal remains found by two fishermen last week are likely those of a missing 31-year-old man who had vanished since last October.

Alex Mardis told his girlfriend on October 30, 2019, that he was going fishing and grabbed a fishing pole. His broken cell phone and driver’s license were found at home.

A witness later said that he saw a man seeking help while battling waters in the Susquehanna River. But Mardis’ aunt isn’t convinced of the story, giving the rainy circumstances that prevented fishing that day due to high water levels: “I don’t believe it for a second,” she said. “He knew better and would not have put himself in danger.”

Authorities added that it would take time to identify the skeleton through DNA and dental records.
