It appears that Derek Chauvin and his victim George Floyd had been working security shifts at a Minneapolis club, Maya Santamaria, the owner said.
Floyd was working as a security guard inside the El Nuevo Rodeo Club on Lake Street while Chauvin worked while off-duty outside the club: “They were working together at the same time, it’s just that Chauvin worked outside and the security guards were inside,” Santamaria said.
Chauvin was trying to restrain Floyd during a Memorial Day incident when he pinned his knee on Floyd’s neck for more than 8 minutes. Floyd died at the scene.
“Chauvin was our off-duty police for almost the entirety of the 17 years that we were open,” the owner said. “I didn’t recognize George as one of our security guys because he looked really different lying there like that.”
