A 58-year-old woman has been pronounced dead after being attacked by an alligator she encountered at South Carolina beach resort, police said.

Cynthia Covert met the killer reptile on Friday at about 5 p.m. The tragic incident occurred on Kiawah Island, a beach and golf resort on the Atlantic Coast, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office explained. The animal was gunned down by a deputy at the scene.

“About 5 p.m. today, deputies responded to a pond near Salt Cedar Ln, Kiawah Island, for a report of alligator encounter w/a woman. The woman has died. A deputy fatally shot and retrieved the gator. The incident is still under investigation,” police said on Twitter.

Fatal encounters with alligators are rare in South Carolina. Two similar incidents have been reported in the state since 2016.
