An Indiana grandmother was taken into custody Saturday for murder and neglect of a dependent resulting in death charges after she intentionally drowned her 4-year-old grandson to death while he was taking a bath because he “would be better off in heaven than to be with her.”
The incident occurred inside Helen Martin’s house while the toddler was taking his bath. His 56-year-old grandmother who has suffered a “past abusive marriage, depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder” climbed fully clothed into the tub and kept his head underwater until he lost consciousness, the suspect’s husband said.
The tot was transported to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead shortly afterward. During the investigation, Martin admitted her criminal acts but argued that she did so because she had been “so depressed recently.”
