Five people were killed late Wednesday when a train struck a vehicle in Gary, Indiana, authorities said.
The train reportedly had 32 passengers onboard when it struck a vehicle with five occupants at the intersection of US 12 and 7th Street at around 10 p.m.
Officials said the vehicle was traveling southbound on 7th Street when it went around the gates and ended up on the train’s path.
All five occupants of the vehicle died in the collision. The train’s crew and passengers were not harmed.
“Putting aside the fact we always want people to be extremely careful around trains and train tracks and to expect a train on a track at any time – there is a tragedy when five human beings are lost and our hearts go out to the family of the loved ones who experienced loss in this accident,” South Shore Line President Mike Noland said.
