A Florida man is behind bars after he allegedly punched a 1-year-old girl to death while babysitting her earlier this week.
Tallahassee police responded to a call reporting a 1-year-old girl not breathing at a home in the 1700 block of Saxon Street on Monday.
First responders attempted life-saving measures on the child, but she was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Detectives “quickly uncovered signs of foul play” in the death of Ky’meria and learned that she and her twin brother were left in the care of 25-year-old Deric Young.
The man broke down in tears as he admitted to punching Ky’meria several times after smoking marijuana. Ky’meria’s twin brother was not harmed.
Police said Young was babysitting the twins while their mother’s cousin, who typically takes care of them, was at work.
“You had to put your hands on her,” the victim’s mother, Nickaiya Walker, said.
“She was an innocent baby. She didn’t deserve that at all. She didn’t deserve nothing.”
