A young North Carolina firefighter died while on duty Thursday morning after suffering a medical emergency.
Jake Bridges, a 20-year-old certified Level II Hickory Fire Department firefighter and EMT, experienced the medical emergency just after 5 a.m.

He had just returned to the station after battling a structure blaze that started at around 2 a.m. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he died.
“It is with a heavy heart that I deliver the news that no fire chief ever wants to deliver. We lost one of our own, Hickory Firefighter Jake Bridges, while on duty,” Fire Chief Matt Hutchinson said.
“We are working with our state partner agencies to gain a better understanding of this tragedy.”
