A shooting in Baldwin Park, California, has left two people dead late Saturday, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said.
Sheriff Robert G. Luna said that a Baldwin Park police officer and a male adult were shot and killed, adding that the suspect was in police custody.
A second officer sustained injuries but is expected to recover.
Baldwin Park police officers responded to a call of a suspect firing shots from a rifle
near 4200 Filhurst Avenue at around 7:12 p.m.
Officers were “met by gunfire” once at the scene. The suspect was also wounded in the confrontation with police.
“It’s extremely tragic to have to deal with this,” said Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert A. Lopez.
Lopez said the fallen officer was an avid snowboarder and Dodgers fan who would travel across the country to watch his favorite team's games.
