A female college student collapsed dead while working out at a gym Tuesday evening, authorities in Brazil said.
Dayane de Jesus, 22, was seated at an exercise machine at the Forma Fitness gym in Rio de Janeiro when she fell backward.
Surveillance footage showed fellow gym-goers rushing to de Jesus’ side, including a doctor who attempted life-saving measures and asked for a defibrillator, which was not available on site.
De Jesus could not be saved, and her friends later confirmed that she had a history of cardiac issues.
“Regardless, if there is this congenital problem, we need to know whether the presence of the defibrillator could have prevented this death,” said Rio de Janeiro Civil Police Chief Angelo Lages.
The deceased was majoring in international studies and set to graduate in June.
“She was already in her last year of college,” friend Rafael D’Avila said. “I think she was a hard-working girl and a source of great pride for her parents, because she really was a great woman.”
