What started as an argument over Fortnite ended in a fatal shooting that left a young man dead and his stepfather detained behind bars.
Davenport Police Chief Steve Parker said the argument involved a mother and her 9-year-old son after she found him playing Fortnite on her phone late Wednesday.
The mom took the phone from the child, who then became upset and went to a nightstand to retrieve a Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun from a drawer.
The mother, Adriane Daza, tried to take the weapon from her son. Parker said Daza’s husband, Kelly Agar Garcia, got the gun from his stepson.
That’s when Garcia’s other stepson, 26-year-old Azareel J. Martinez, came in and started arguing with him.
Garcia allegedly fired multiple shots at Martinez, killing him.
The stepfather was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and allowing a minor to access an unsecured firearm.
