Texas death row inmate executed for burning, killing convenience store clerk

A Texas death row inmate was put to death on Tuesday 13 years to May 20, 2012, the day he set a store clerk on fire, killing her during a robbery.

Matthew Lee Johnson, 49, admitted to burning 76-year-old Nancy Harris after splashing her with lighter fluid and demanding money.

“As I look at each one of you, I can see her on that day,” Johnson said. “I please ask for your forgiveness.”

    “I made wrong choices, I’ve made wrong decisions, and now I pay the consequences.”

    Johnson, who claimed to be high at the time of the crime, gasped and snored after receiving the lethal injection. He died at 6:53 p.m., 26 minutes after the drugs were administered.
