A Texas death row inmate was put to death on Tuesday 13 years to May 20, 2012, the day he set a store clerk on fire, killing her during a robbery.
Matthew Lee Johnson, 49, admitted to burning 76-year-old Nancy Harris after splashing her with lighter fluid and demanding money.
“As I look at each one of you, I can see her on that day,” Johnson said. “I please ask for your forgiveness.”
“I never meant to hurt her. I pray that she’s the first person I see when I open my eyes and I spend eternity with.”
“I made wrong choices, I’ve made wrong decisions, and now I pay the consequences.”
Johnson, who claimed to be high at the time of the crime, gasped and snored after receiving the lethal injection. He died at 6:53 p.m., 26 minutes after the drugs were administered.
