A woman was attacked and killed by an alligator on Lake Kissimmee south of Orlando, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said.
The victim was reportedly canoeing with another person when she was attacked and dragged into the water just after 4 p.m.
Her body was later recovered from the river near the mouth of Tiger Creek.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the victim was in a kayak distinguished by an enclosed hull, but a commission spokesperson described the boat as a canoe with an open hull.
The search operation involved deputies and Fish and Wildlife Conservation officers.
A contractor nuisance alligator trapper was called to the scene. It remains unclear whether the reptile has been located.
The woman’s identity was not made public. The person who was with her at the time of the attack was not injured.
