Nine people were killed and several others wounded in the Canadian city of Vancouver after a man plowed his car into a crowd at a Filipino heritage festival late Saturday.
The 30-year-old man drove his vehicle into people attending the Lapu Lapu Day festival at around 8:14 p.m.
The exact number of the injured remains unclear. The man was detained by bystanders and then taken into police custody.
“At this time, we are confident that this incident was not an act of terrorism,” police said.
Chilling footage depicted the chaotic scene just after the crash, with bodies lying on the ground and a damaged black SUV.
“We saw people on the road crying, others were like running, shouting, or even screaming, asking for help. So we tried to go there just to check what was really actually happening until we found some bodies on the ground. Others were lifeless, others like, you know injured,” a witness recalled.
“It was terrible to see that kind of incident, that situation. It was heartbreaking.”
