An Arizona man succumbed to his injuries two weeks after he was attacked with a hatchet by a stranger at a Tucson bus stop in front of his wife.
Daniel Couch, 32, has been on life support since the April 6 attack that nearly decapitated him. He died on Thursday, police confirmed.
Couch and his wife were sitting on a bench at a bus stop when an intoxicated Daniel McMichael approached them, yelling and wielding a hatchet.
The victim allegedly responded to McMichael, who hit him in the back of the neck with the hatchet.
“The injury cut the artery in the back of his neck in half. It went so deep that it hit his skull,” the victim’s sister-in-law said.
The 25-year-old suspect initially said he did not recall the incident, but later admitted to confronting Couch after seeing surveillance footage.
His charges were upgraded from aggravated assault to first-degree murder following Couch’s demise.
