Authorities in Florida said a 34-year-old man was gunned down by police after he held his parents hostage for several hours and threatened to shoot them.
Wayne Volz was shot dead at a Bartow shopping center after his father managed to call 911 from a hardware store where he worked.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said that earlier on Friday, Volz pistol-whipped his mother and threatened to shoot his father and hold them hostage for hours inside their Fort Meade home.
Volz eventually agreed to drive his father to his job at the store where he placed the 911 call.
Sheriff’s deputies and Bartow Police officers responded to the call and located Volz, who confronted police, shooting a deputy and an officer, before he was shot and killed.
“We shot him enough, we shot him a lot. We stopped the threat,” Judd said.
The injured cops are expected to make a full recovery. The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave as the incident is being investigated.
