Vice President JD Vance said Friday that the people of Greenland would choose independence from Denmark after three centuries of Danish control.
The VP’s defiant remarks came during his visit to a US base in the Arctic north of the island. He and his wife Usha initially planned to attend a traditional dog-sled race but abandoned the idea following local demonstrations.
“The President has said clearly he doesn’t think military force is going to be necessary, but he absolutely believes Greenland is an important part of the security, not just of the United States, but of the world and, of course, the people of Greenland, too,” Vance added.
“Denmark hasn’t done a good job at keeping Greenland safe…We can’t bury our heads in the sand – or in this case in the snow – and pretend the Chinese are not interested in this landmass.”
President Donald Trump shared his ambitions about Greenland yesterday while speaking at the White House.
“We need Greenland. Very importantly, for international security, we have to have Greenland,” the President said.
“If you look at the waterways, you have Chinese and Russian ships all over the place…we’re not relying on Denmark or anybody else to take care of that situation.”
