An Indiana mother has been charged this week after she allegedly left her two young babies unattended while she spent time at a bar and then at a jail for driving while under the influence.
Muncie Police arrested a drunken 32-year-old Sandra Marie Henriquez after she crashed her car into a pole early Wednesday morning.
She reportedly denied having children when asked by police but admitted the opposite to jail staff while declining to give her home address or a phone number of a friend or relative.
It wasn’t until 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday when police responded to reports of babies crying inside a home and learned that it was Henriquez’s resident.
Officers found two children, a one-year-old and a nine-day-old, covered in feces and suffering from malnutrition.
The infant had blue hands, feet, and mouth and needed a feeding tube after being admitted at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.
The mother admitted to leaving her children at about 12:30 a.m. and going to the bar where she drank a six-pack of beer.
She has been charged with neglect of a dependent causing serious bodily injuries, neglect of a dependent-abandonment, two counts of neglect of a dependent, and obstruction of justice.
