At least eight people were killed in a massive pileup involving more than 70 vehicles on a Kansas interstate Saturday afternoon.
Authorities said extreme winds of up to 65 mph caused dusty conditions and zero visibility in the area by late Friday.
More than 30 people were taken to hospitals. Eight victims were confirmed dead, including some who had to be “cut out of their vehicles,” according to Goodland Fire Chief Brian James.
“We had to think outside the box to get patients transported to hospitals in Goodland and Colby by using our fire department support vehicles to using patrol vehicles,” said James.
“I’m sorry for the lives lost in this, but I’m grateful for the ones we could save.”
The Kansas Highway Patrol set up the phone number, 785-827-4437, for anyone looking for a loved one who may be involved in the massive crash.
