Authorities suspect the body of a missing University of Pittsburgh student may be trapped in the ocean after she apparently drowned on a Spring Break vacation to the Dominican Republic.
Sudiksha Konanki, 20, vanished from the beach of the Riu Republica Hotel early on March 6.
She and Joshua Steven Riibe, a fellow spring breaker, were hit by an intense wave and swept out to sea.
The 22-year-old man told cops he managed to rescue Konanki and last saw her walking in knee-deep water before he passed out.
Investigators believe Konanki had drowned and suggest her body could be stuck in coral reefs offshore.
“The body may be stranded on the reefs, on the coral reefs, which is why the Navy has deployed a team of Navy and local divers to comb the entire area where there are reefs or corals,” Vice Admiral Agustin Morillo Rodriguez said.
“So far, unfortunately, we have not been able to find the young woman.”
