Deadly wrong-way crash shuts down I-45; causes delays in rush hour: Houston Police

A deadly multi-vehicle crash closed all lanes of the I-45 North Freeway during the morning rush hour causing a six-hour-long disturbance, Houston officials said.

Police said an intoxicated woman drove a black Ford F-150 on the wrong lane of the freeway before colliding head-on with a Jeep, killing the male driver at around 3 a.m.

  • Two other vehicles struck the debris. Sgt. Dionne Griffiths said the involved vehicles “aren’t drivable, pretty much damaged due to a person driving the wrong way on the freeway.”

    The 35-year-old intoxicated driver was arrested and is facing charges of intoxication manslaughter.

    “Just don’t drink and drive. We say it all the time. No one is exempt from something horrible happening from drinking and driving,” Griffiths added.
