A Missouri man was taken into custody after he allegedly called his son and confessed to killing three women and a dog just after midnight Sunday.
Jodie Hopcus, 49, Sherri Duncan, 73, and Hailey Hopcus, 24, were declared dead at around 12:41 a.m. after officers responded to the Kansas City home they shared with Armando Navarro Jr.
Navarro was identified as the killer by a surviving victim who managed to escape the massacre with the help of her sister moments before she was shot dead.
The survivor told police Navarro was her mother’s ex-boyfriend and that they had been arguing for an hour before she asked him to leave.
The suspect said he had nowhere to go and retrieved a gun, shooting the woman in the arm.
When he ran out of ammunition, he grabbed another firearm and shot the survivor’s mother, sister, and grandmother to death.
Navarro was arrested about 170 miles away in Abilene. He reportedly called his son at around 2 a.m. and told him he “killed them all.”
“It’s one of the worst crimes that I’ve prosecuted in my 22 years of prosecution,” said Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd.
“Three women are dead and a surviving victim lost her mother, her grandmother, and her sister,”
“My prayers are with the entire family, and I want you to know that we will utilize the full weight of Missouri law to ring this defendant to justice.”
